Valcalepio

Valcalepio is Kalos-Epias, meaning “good land, sweet land.”

Valcalepio stretches between Lake Iseo and Lake Lecco, a varied foothill area that has been linked to wine for centuries. In an ecosystem rich in natural characteristics favorable to our vines, great wines with surprising character are born.

The history of Valcalepio

Viticulture already deeply rooted in Roman times

Valcalepio is a territory historically linked to wine culture.

Viticulture was already well established in Roman times. It became so important that a temple was dedicated to Bacchus in the ancient village of San Lorenzo.

At the end of the 11th century, almost four-fifths of the cultivated land was covered by vineyards. Even during the dark ages, the people of Bergamo never stopped loving their wine, producing about three times their needs between 1400 and 1600.

In 1976, the first official recognition came with three historic DOCs, among the oldest in Italy, a sign of the desire to focus immediately on quality agriculture.

The vineyards

The vineyards and microclimate of Valcalepio complete the story of our production.

The care that winemaker Luigi puts into making wine is only part of the story. It is the vocation of the vineyards that completes the story of our production.

The winery’s thirteen hectares are located between 300 and 400 meters above sea level, in the picturesque hillside amphitheater of San Pantaleone.

On clay-limestone marl soils, we grow 70% red grape varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Pinot Noir—and the remaining 30% white grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, and Moscato Giallo, challenging the territorial conventions that for years have based viticulture solely on red grape varieties.

A unique combination that gives the wines elegance, structure, and territorial identity.

Grumello del Monte,
the City of Wine

Grumello del Monte, the village where we are located, was officially recognized as a “City of Wine” in 1980 by the National Association, due to its strong wine-growing tradition and its historical and cultural heritage.

In 1870, one of Italy’s first agricultural schools was founded here, demonstrating how deeply rooted this connection with the land was.

Today, its hills are a breathtaking sight, almost entirely covered with vineyards.
